St. Elsewhere

St. Elsewhere is an American medical drama that ran on NBC from October 26, 1982, to May 25, 1988. In the show, Ed Flanders, Norman Lloyd, and William Daniels played teaching doctors at a hospital in Boston that wasn't very well known. They helped interns make important medical and life decisions. The show was made by MTM Enterprises, which also made the popular NBC police drama Hill Street Blues around the same time. The two shows were often compared because they both had ensemble casts and serialized stories that crossed over. St. Elsewhere was filmed at CBS/MTM Studios, which was known as CBS/Fox Studios when the show started. By chance, 20th Century Fox ended up buying the rights to the series when it bought MTM Enterprises in the 1990s. During its 6-season, 137-episode run, St. Elsewhere gained a small but loyal fan base. The show also did well with Nielsen's 18-49 age demographic, which later became known as a young, well-off audience that TV advertisers want to reach. During its run, the show was praised by critics and won 13 Emmy Awards for its writing, acting, and directing. St. Elsewhere was ranked #20 on TV Guide's list of "The 50 Greatest TV Shows of All Time" in 2002. In 1993, the magazine also named it the best drama series of the 1980s.
