As the Wild West era draws to a close, Monte Walsh, an old cowboy, must deal with its passing. Monte and his pals have less and fewer options to choose from as the use of cowboys is gradually phased out as a result of the proliferation of barbed wire and railways. They have access to new employment prospects, but the independence that comes with living in the wide prairie is what they truly yearn for. They will all eventually have to bid farewell to the lives they have known and attempt to make a fresh start in a new life.
