Monte Walsh
Monte Walsh and Chet Rollins have been cowhands for a long time, doing whatever ranch work comes their way, but "there's nothing they can't do from a horse." Their days are divided between months on the range and trips into town. Monte has a long-term relationship with the prostitute Martine Bernard, while Chet has fallen under the spell of the hardware store's widow. Their days are filled with camaraderie and competition with the other cowboys, until one of the hands, Shorty Austin, loses his job and becomes involved in rustling and killing. Then Monte and Chet discover that their lives on the range have been irreversibly altered.
