The twelve-hour miniseries Roots is based on the best-selling 1976 novel Roots: The Saga of an American Family by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Alex Haley. Haley's ancestors' epic saga was first presented in his 1976 book Roots: The Saga of an American Family. Beginning in the mid-1700s in Gambia, West Africa, and concluding in the post-Civil War United States, the documentary-drama spans more than a century. This miniseries from 1977 ultimately earned nine Emmy awards, a Golden Globe award, and a Peabody award, and it remains the most watched miniseries in U.S. history.
