JAG is an American legal drama television series created by Donald P. Bellisario and produced by Belisarius Productions in collaboration with Paramount Network Television. The first season was created in collaboration with NBC Productions. The pilot episode of JAG, which was designed as a Top Gun meets A Few Good Men hybrid, first aired on NBC on September 23, 1995; however, the series was canceled on May 22, 1996 after finishing 79th in the ratings, leaving one episode unaired. Beginning on January 3, 1997, rival network CBS picked up the series as a midseason replacement. CBS's decision to carry JAG proved wise, as the show rose in the ratings for several seasons and remained on the air for nine more. JAG also generated the successful series NCIS, which inspired another hit, NCIS: Los Angeles. Over the course of ten seasons, 227 episodes were created, and JAG was seen in over 100 countries during its fifth season. JAG was so popular that it went into syndication in early 1999 and is still regularly broadcast.
