Alex the lion is the urban jungle's king and the primary attraction at the Central Park Zoo in New York City. Together with his best buddies Marty the zebra, Melman the giraffe, and Gloria the hippos, he has spent his entire life in happy captivity in front of an admiring crowd and with regular meals given. Marty, unable to leave well enough alone, escapes to explore the globe with the aid of a few industrious penguins, as he is unable to be content with the status quo.
