In March 1964, 37 neighbors in Queens, New York, witnessed Kitty Genovese's horrible murder. None of them intervenes or calls the cops. 37 chronicles the lives of a couple of these individuals and the events leading up to the night when they remained inexplicably passive viewers. The video offers an evocative depiction of a changing borough and a period marked by racism, the Civil Rights Movement, and political upheavals. The actual event that inspired the film's plot has been dubbed a symbol for America's loss of innocence. Puk Grasten deftly combines many destiny, dreams, and familial conflicts into her feature film debut by taking us on a tour of an apartment building that eventually succumbs to communal failure.
