When his companion is killed, hard Irish detective Eddie Ryan (Robert Duvall) swears to retaliate the death, whatever the price. As he begins unraveling hints, his actions ends up being so outrageous that he's obliged to turn in his badge, but the experience just emboldens him. Ryan at some point finds out that his companion was caught up in a Puerto Rican gun-running system masterminded by a scoundrel named Sweet Willie (Henry Darrow), who wishes to raise war of independence.
