Target

Target was a police drama show that aired on BBC1 from 1977 to 1978. The 13th Regional Crime Squad was based in Southampton. The show was first created by producer Graham Williams under the name Hackett. He was then asked to switch roles with Philip Hinchcliffe, who was leaving his job as the producer of Doctor Who. Hinchcliffe renamed the show Target. Det. Supt. Steve Hackett was played by Patrick Mower, Det. Sgt. Frank Bonney was played by Brendan Price, Det. Sgt. Louise Colbert was played by Vivien Heilbron, and Det. Chief Supt. Tate was played by Philip Madoc. Over the course of two series, seventeen episodes were made. The show was the BBC's answer to The Sweeney, a very popular show on ITV. Like The Sweeney, most of the cars were Fords, mostly Cortinas and Granadas. However, Hackett's personal car is an American car that looks like a Dodge Charger and is seen in a number of episodes. Compared to The Sweeney, this series is much less funny, and at the time, it was thought to be more violent than The Sweeney, but it's hard to tell the difference now. The second season was calmer. Also, Patrick Mower is such a good actor that he seems to overpower the rest of the cast, which wasn't the case in Sweeney. Dudley Simpson wrote the theme song. Each episode was about 50 minutes long. Robert Banks Stewart was thought to take over as producer for a third season. He was the show's producer for two weeks. During that time, he planned to change the supporting cast, make the show less violent, and move it farther away from The Sweeney. But then, the head of drama told him that the show was being canceled and asked him to come up with a new crime show in its place. He came up with the idea for the mystery show Shoestring.
