Outrageous Fortune is a comedy-drama television series that aired on TV3 from July 12, 2005 until November 9, 2010. The series followed the life of the career criminal West family after the matriarch, Cheryl, decided that the family should become law-abiding citizens. South Pacific Pictures produced the show created by James Griffin and Rachel Lang. As with the show itself, episodes were named after Shakespearean phrases. It aired for six seasons and 107 episodes, making it the longest-running drama series ever produced in New Zealand. Robyn Malcolm, Antony Starr, Siobhan Marshall, Antonia Prebble, Frank Whitten, and Kirk Torrance comprised the show's principal cast; Grant Bowler appeared in infrequent roles over the first five seasons. On July 12, 2005, the series launched to widespread praise. Malcolm's performance was praised by the vast majority of New Zealand critics during the show's first four years on air. After the success of Outrageous Fortune, both the United States and the United Kingdom adapted the show into their own individual shows, neither of which was renewed after the first season.
