The Gamilons launched their invasion of Earth in 2194, and by 2199, the world has been completely destroyed by the bombs that they dropped on it. The surviving members of humanity have retreated below ground to get away from the radioactive surface. One day, a former pilot named Susumu Kodai finds a capsule that was sent from the planet Iscandar. Inside of the capsule is information regarding a technology that can remove radiation from the surface of the Earth. In the hopes of preventing the destruction of Earth, the Earth Defense Force overhauls the battleship Yamato and equips it with an innovative form of propulsion technology so that it can make the journey to Iscandar. Within a year, the radiation will wipe out all of the remaining members of the human race.
