An escaped Union soldier is released from jail and embarks on a journey with a fellow prisoner to Missouri, where his traveling partner is shot and hanged for horse stealing near the conclusion of the American Civil War. California chooses to move the deceased companion's possessions to his family's ranch, where he meets and falls in love with the deceased companion's sister, who becomes his wife. In the meantime, the "ghosts" of the war resurface in an unexpected manner, tormenting him once more.
