The timeless adaptation by the BBC of Tolstoy's epic tale of love and loss, which is set against the backdrop of the Napoleonic Wars. David Swift plays Napoleon, whose decision to invade Russia in 1812 has far-reaching consequences for Pierre as well as the Rostov and Bolkonsky families. Anthony Hopkins heads the cast as Pierre Bezuhov, a role for which he won the 1972 Best Actor BAFTA. Morag Hood plays the impulsive and beautiful Natasha Rostova. Alan Dobie plays the stoic but heroic Andrei Bolkonsky. David Swift plays Napoleon. David Conroy, the show's producer, had the idea for the twenty-part serial, and his primary objective was to adapt Tolstoy's most famous book into a television drama that would capture the novel's rich characters and incidental content. Conroy's War and Peace features award-winning performances, design that won the BAFTA for Best Design in1972, and stunning battle sequences that were filmed in the region that was formerly known as Yugoslavia. The screenplay was written by Jack Pulman, and John Davies was the film's director.
