Thomas & Friends debuted on ITV in 1984. It's based on Wilbert and Christopher Awdry's Railway Series. These novels feature anthropomorphized trains and cars on the imaginary Island of Sodor. Wilbert created the books to keep his son Christopher entertained as he recovered from measles. Many of the stories in Series 1 through 4 are based on Awdry's personal experiences.
