The Vision of Escaflowne

The Vision of Escaflowne is a 26-part Japanese anime series directed by Kazuki Akane and produced by Sunrise Studios. It first aired on TV Tokyo on April2,1996, and the final episode aired on September24, 1996. The series was also shown on Sony's anime satellite channel, Animax, in Japan and on its numerous overseas networks, including Hong Kong, Taiwan, Southeast Asia, and South Asia. Bandai Entertainment has licensed the series for Region 1 release. The series follows Hitomi, an adolescent high school student who is drawn from Earth to the planet Gaea when a boy named Van appears on the high school track while fighting a dragon. She gets trapped in the thick of a conflict in Gaea, as the Zaibach Empire tries to conquer the land. Van leads his mystical mech Escaflowne in the fight against the Zaibach Empire, with the help of Allen. In Gaea, Hitomi's fortune-telling abilities bloom as she becomes the key to awakening Escaflowne and foiling Zaibach's schemes. During the development of the anime series, two manga retellings of the narrative were created and released: a shnen version titled The Vision of Escaflowne and a shjo retelling titled Hitomi—The Vision of Escaflowne. In1997, Escaflowne—Memories, Energist's a second shjo adaptation, was published as a single book. Yumiko Tsukamoto, Hajime Yatate, and Shoji Kawamori adapted the narrative into a series of six light novels. Escaflowne: The Movie, a film adaptation, was released on June24,2000, but it shows only a passing similarity to the original series. In addition to the series, four CD soundtracks and a drama CD have been issued.
