The Six Million Dollar Man is a television series that originated in the United States and tells the story of a former astronaut who has received bionic implants and now works for a made-up government agency known as OSI. The series is based on the novel Cyborg by Martin Caidin, which was also one of the titles that was considered for the series while it was in pre-production. Following the airing of three television movies in 1973, The Six Million Dollar Man debuted as a regular series on the ABC network and ran for a total of five seasons, beginning in 1974 and ending in 1978. Lee Majors, who played Lee Majors in the title role of Steve Austin and went on to become a pop cultural phenomenon of the 1970s, played Steve Austin. The Bionic Woman was a spin-off series that aired from 1976 to 1978. Between the years 1987 and 1994, a number of television movies featuring both of the series' namesake characters were also produced.
