The Agency

The Agency is a CBS television drama about the CIA. Michael Frost Beckner conceived the show, which he, Shaun Cassidy Productions, and Radiant Productions executive produced in collaboration with Universal Network Television and CBS Productions. It ran for two seasons, from September27, 2001 through May17, 2003. It included unique footage from inside the CIA's headquarters. The episode sparked debate because of its examination of current international events and portrayal of the ethical difficulties that come with intelligence operations. After Osama Bin Laden's Al Qaeda terrorist network organizes a lethal strike on the west, Beckner's pilot script, published in March2001, envisioned a re-invented CIA entrusted with a "War on Terror." The pilot was supposed to premiere on September18, 2001 at CIA Headquarters and air on CBS on September21,2001, however the actual 9/11 events led CBS to postpone the pilot and instead air a later episode. The third episode of the first season was based on that first episode. The terrorist attacks of September11, 2001 transformed the way Americans viewed current events, and "The Agency" was one of the most topical shows on network television at the time. The show's producers reacted promptly to this new American perspective on world events, but CBS decided to discontinue it shortly after the second season's final episode.
