Recess is an American animated television series produced by Walt Disney Television Animation and created by Paul Germain and Joe Ansolabehere. The show follows six primary school pupils as they interact with their peers and teachers. In North American society, the title refers to the hour during the school day when students are not in lessons and are outside in the schoolyard. One of the series' most notable elements is how the youngsters create their own civilization, complete with government and a class structure, set against the backdrop of a typical school. Recess premiered on ABC in 1997 and ran through 2001, with repeats on Disney Channel in the United States. Due to the series' success, it was exported to many nations throughout the world, including the United Kingdom, where it ran on many networks including Toon Disney and Disney Channel UK. Recess: School's Out, the first of two films based on the series, was released theatrically by Walt Disney Pictures in 2001. That same year, a direct-to-video sequel named Recess Christmas: Miracle on Third Street was released. Recess: Taking the Fifth Grade was released in 2003, with Recess: All Growed Down. Both were direct-to-video releases. The characters also appeared in a Lilo & Stitch: The Series episode.
