Margaret Hale is a southerner from a rural vicarage who has recently relocated to the industrial city of Milton in the north. As a result of the shock of her relocation, she misjudge the flamboyant cotton mill owner John Thornton, whose purposefulness and fervor are equal to her own pride and determination. When the employees of Milton call for a strike, Margaret takes their side, escalating their conflict. Margaret, to her astonishment, begins to fall in love with Thornton as situations deteriorate.
