Roy Huggins is the creator of the hilarious American Western television series Maverick. The sitcom aired on ABC from September22, 1957 to July8, 1962 and stars James Garner as the deftly eloquent cardsharp Bret Maverick. Eight episodes into the first season, he was joined by Jack Kelly as his brother Bart, and from then on, Garner and Kelly alternated week to week, occasionally teaming up for a two-brother episode. The Mavericks were a group of Texas-based poker players that toured throughout the American Old West and on Mississippi riverboats, continually getting into and out of life-threatening situations involving money, ladies, or both. Typically, they would have to evaluate a financial windfall against a moral dilemma. Since both Mavericks were incredibly moral, their consciences outweighed their finances the majority of the time. Roger Moore was cast as their cousin Beau Maverick when James Garner quit the series due to a legal disagreement following the third season. Robert Colbert later returned in the fourth season as Brent Maverick, the third Maverick sibling. Never did more than two series leads appear in the same episode, and typically only one.
