Danish TV show Matador ran from 1978 to 1982. The story takes place in fictional Korsbaek, Denmark, between 1929 and 1947. It focuses on the competition between the families of two businessmen: banker Hans Christian Varns and social climber Mads Skjern, who comes in town as the series begins. Matador is a localized version of Monopoly and the series' tentative English title. In Danish, a "matador" is used to characterize a business tycoon, referring to Mads Skjern's craftiness as a self-made entrepreneur. Matador was created by author Lise Nrgaard and co-written by Karen Smith, Jens Louis Petersen, and Paul Hammerich. The series is one of the most popular instances of Danish television and symbolizes the height of the growth of Danish TV drama by Danmarks Radio. The series has become part of the modern self-understanding of Danes, partly because of its mix of melodrama and warm Danish humour in the depiction of characters, who were portrayed by a wide range of the most popular Danish actors at the time, but also because of its accurate portrayal of a turbulent Denmark from around the start of the Great Depression and through Nazi Germany's occupation of Denmark in World War II.
