Denise Woods, a female police officer, is the central character of Life of Crime. The drama follows Denise as she rises through the ranks of the Metropolitan Police Service over three decades, beginning with the Brixton Riots of 1985. She struggles at first in a male-dominated field where discrimination is rampant and female officers must fight for acceptance. Denise and DS Ray Deans find Anna's battered, strangled body one September morning. Denise is determined to bring Anna's killer to justice after a previous encounter with her. Denise defies her superior officers' clear instructions and recommendations and pursues her own lines of inquiry, as the facts surrounding Anna's death aren't what they look. Denise's zeal for the case causes her to clash with her senior officer, DCI Ferguson, as the investigation proceeds.
