In the beginning of the story, which takes place in England in the 19th century, a young nobleman named Jonathan Joestar finds himself himself in a fierce competition with a low-born child named Dio Brando. Jonathan's father had taken Dio under his wing after the death of Dio's father. Dio is dissatisfied with his station in life, and his insatiable desire to rule over everyone and everything eventually compels him to search for the supernatural abilities contained within an ancient Aztec stone mask that is held by the Joestar family. This is the artifact that will alter the course of Dio and Jonathan's lives for all future generations. Joseph Joestar, Jonathan's grandson, must take up his grandfather's mission fifty years later in 1938 in New York City. He must master the abilities necessary to destroy the stone mask and its immensely powerful creators, the Pillar men, who pose a threat to the very existence of humanity. Jonathan's mission was to destroy the stone mask and the Pillar men.
