Dick Hickock, age20, is incarcerated after he overhears a cellmate's tale of a wealthy rancher who hid $10,000 in cash in a home safe. When he is released from prison, Dick convinces 20-year-old ex-offender Perry Smith to join him in pursuing the stockpile. On a November night in 1959, Dick and Perry break into the home of Herb Clutter in Holcomb, Kansas.
