Swinging London, 1969. Mouth is a journal that is published by Ray Purbbs, who lives in Notting Hill Gate, and is aided in the editing process by his fellow hippies Alex, Jill, and Hugo. The magazine is known as a "underground" publication. Ray is completely persuaded that he is, or has the potential to be, a significant actor in the conflict between the Establishment and the alternative society. He is also extremely excited about every hip movement, to the point of being ridiculous. Alex, despite the fact that he comes from an affluent family and seems more interested in golf than in changing society, is the embodiment of coolness; he is a man who is so laid-back that he appears to exist outside of reality. Jill claims to support free love and welcomes all of the newly discovered liberties allowed to women of her gender. However, this attitude does not extend to her so-called "lover," Ray, who has for a long time been deprived of her sexual interest. Hugo is a master of obfuscation and is almost amazing in his ability to be cryptic. The group of four, led by Ray, is known for jumping on every popular bandwagon but never managing to make even the tiniest bit of a difference in whatever they accomplish. The gang is terrible at just about everything; in point of fact, they aren't even particularly skilled at being hippies.
