Alan Bleasdale wrote the seven-part British TV drama GBH, which aired on Channel 4 in the summer of 1991. The main characters were Michael Murray, the Militant tendency-supporting Labour leader of a city council in the North of England, and Jim Nelson, the headmaster of a school for troubled children. The show was controversial in part because Murray seemed to be based on Derek Hatton, the former Deputy Leader of Liverpool City Council. In an interview on the G.B.H. DVD, Bleasdale talks about a chance meeting with Hatton before the show. Hatton says he knows Bleasdale's plans but doesn't mind as long as the actor playing him is "handsome." In everyday language, the letters "GBH" stand for the crime of grievous bodily harm. However, the letters are supposed to stand for "Great British Holiday."
