Haruka Nanase, a little kid who has always enjoyed being immersed in water and swimming in it, is the protagonist of the novel. He competed in a swimming event with Makoto Tachibana, Nagisa Hazuki, and Rin Matsuoka, members of his swimming club, before graduating from elementary school. Each of the boys went their separate ways after winning. Rin enters in the middle of their mundane high school existence and challenges Haruka to a fight, demonstrating his enormous might to Haruka. Not wanting things to finish this way, Haruka reassembles Makoto and Nagisa and adds a new member, Rei Ryugazaki, to form the Iwatobi High School Swimming Club in order to defeat Rin.
