From 1988 through1995, NBC broadcasted the sitcom Empty Nest. Susan Harris, the series' creator and producer, designed it as a spin-off of The Golden Girls. Empty Nest was one of the top ten most-watched shows on television for the first three seasons. Witt/Thomas/Harris Productions collaborated with Touchstone Television on the film. The show's concept was inspired by the British comedy series Father, Dear Father, which likewise starred a father who lived with his two kids and a huge dog. Unlike that series, however, Empty Nest's two children are adults who can support themselves, and the protagonist is a widower. NBC's Saturday night block of programming included Empty Nest, which aired at 9:30 p.m. ET for the first four seasons, immediately after The Golden Girls. Mulligan played Manoff's father-in-law in Susan Harris' previous soap, Soap.
