Disco was a German pop music show that ran from 1971 until 1982 on the ZDF network. Each show lasted 45 minutes and aired on the first Saturday of every month at 7:30 p.m. There were a total of 133 shows. Ilja Richter, a German actor and comedian, hosted the event. 4-3-2-1 Hot & Sweet, a ZDF show that aired between 1966 and 1970 and featured Ilja Richter and Suzanne Doucet as hosts, was a lesser-known forerunner. When compared to ZDF's Hitparade, Disco catered to a younger pop-oriented audience, and until1972, Beat-Club, followed by Musikladen, both on ARD, were its major competitors. After 3sat closed down in1989, repeats of Disco have been broadcast on ZDF Musikkanal since 1984. The full series has been aired on the digital ZDF Theaterkanal since 2004. Beginning in2007, ZDF Dokukanal began airing reruns of the series, beginning with episodes from1975, and in2008, hit24 broadcast repeated replays of the series. The broadcast focused on current chart songs, with foreign pop music and German Schlager getting almost equal coverage. Despite its name, it did not specialize in disco music, however it did feature numerous disco songs as long as they were commercially viable.
