A high school student named Alex feels constantly overshadowed by his younger brother, Stevie; he hasn't been able to land the girl of his dreams; he and his two best friends, Abby and James, feel like outsiders at their school; and he is constantly benched on his football team, among other problems. Afterwards, Stevie receives a fortunate coin from an unknown elderly gentleman, a coin which he presents to Alex with the instruction that he make a wish with it. Everything Alex ever wanted comes true the next day: Stevie is no longer in his life (in fact, he is the star of his own television show, and his family is completely unaware of his existence); Alex dates the most popular girl at school; he is one of the most popular kids himself; and he is the star of the football team. At first, he is content with his new life, only to discover that everything that was wonderful about his previous life has now been taken away by circumstance.
