It was in WWII Western Germany, and Private David Manning had to leave behind a fellow soldier who was dying. He went looking for survivors from his platoon, but learned from his commanding officer, Captain Pritchett, that they had all died in battle. Manning asked for a discharge because he was mentally ill, but he was promoted to sergeant and told to lead a new platoon of young soldiers.
