When Charles Adare moves to Australia in 1831, his cousin, who is now governor, helps him start a new life there. When he gets there, he meets powerful landowner and ex-convict Sam Flusky, who wants to make a business deal with him when he gets there. Charles meets Flusky's wife, Henrietta, while at a dinner party at his house. Henrietta was a friend of Charles's when he was a child in Ireland. It looks like Henrietta is an alcoholic and is on the verge of going crazy.
