It is inevitable that every hero has a flaw, and Moriarty was Sherlock Holmes' flaw. New York City in the 1970s is a place where Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson solve riddles and look for Moriarty. The fact that Sherlock Holmes is a psychotic paranoid and that Dr. Watson is a female psychiatrist who is fascinated by his case is essentially incidental to the plot of the novel.
