The Umbrellas of Cherbourg

In 1957, this simple romantic tragedy begins. Guy Foucher, a 20-year-old French car mechanic, is head over heels in love with Geneviève Emery, a 17-year-old employee at her widowed mother's swanky but cash-strapped umbrella shop. Guy and Geneviève make love the night before he leaves on a two-year combat tour in Algeria. She falls pregnant and has to decide whether to wait for Guy's return or accept a marriage proposal from a wealthy diamond trader.
