The Trial

In2016, Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff was impeached and removed from office following a corruption scandal involving, among others, her then-vice-president Michel Temer. Maria Augusta Ramos watches Rousseff's trial from the defense team's perspective. This is a slow-burning courtroom drama: the many parties' appearances eventually transform the proceedings into something resembling theatre. Grand emotions are amplified within the courtroom, as lobbyists and fans pace the corridors on the other side of the doors. Meanwhile, people are singing like a Greek chorus outside, in front of Brasilia's modernist government buildings. Only the central character, Rousseff, maintains a professional demeanor.
