Inspector Nick Cafmeyer seemed to have it all - good looks, intelligence, and a prosperous career. However, a dark cloud hangs over his life: he has been troubled by the unsolved disappearance of his younger brother, Bjorn, since he was nine years old. Plettinckx, a convicted sex offender, was questioned but freed shortly afterwards. Plettinckx lives nearby and delights in pestering Nick. Then, when a terrible case involving a missing nine-year-old is discovered, Nick leads a large search that devolves into a merciless manhunt.
