Baptista, a wealthy Paduan businessman, declares that his lovely young daughter Bianca shall remain unmarried until her older sister Katharina, a devilish shrew, marries. Bianca had fallen in love with Lucentio, a student and the son of a wealthy Pisan businessman. To obtain access to the Baptista household and be near Bianca, he poses as a music and poetry tutor. Meanwhile, Petruchio, a scoundrel from Verona on the lookout for a wealthy lady, comes in Padua. Another suitor for Bianca, Hortensio, draws Petruchio's attention to Katharina. Petruchio is challenged and decides to capture Katharina's heart after Hortensio tells him about her scolding tongue and fierce temper. Hortensio and Gremio, another Bianca suitor, agree to pay Petruchio's expenses while he pursues Katharina.
