Lou-Jean and Clovis Poplin, married small-time crooks, lose their baby to the state of Texas and vow to do whatever it takes to get him back. Lou-Jean gets Clovis out of jail, and the two kidnap their foster son while holding a highway patrolman hostage. As a massive dragnet begins to pursue them across Texas, the couple transforms into unlikely folk heroes, even bonding with the captured cop.
