The Strange Love of Martha Ivers

Martha, a young girl, unwittingly kills her nasty, authoritarian aunt. Martha lies to the cops, and the girl's testimony is corroborated by Walter, who witnessed the crime. They eventually married for the sake of convenience; Walter is genuinely in love, and Martha believes her secret is secure now that she has married the only witness to her aunt's death. When Martha's childhood friend, Sam, shows up, she realizes her dark history won't be hidden for much longer.
