The Square

The Square, a new film by Jehane Noujaim (Control Room; Rafea: Solar Mama), examines the harsh realities encountered on a daily basis by those attempting to construct Egypt's new democracy. The video gives a colorful, visceral experience of the battle by thrusting us into the action that spans 2011 and 2012. The film, which follows various teenage activists, is centered on Cairo's Tahrir Square. Armed with values, resolve, music, comedy, a plethora of social media, and sheer obstinacy, they recognize that Hosni Mubarak's ouster merely marked the beginning of the difficult route to democracy. The life-or-death conflict between the people and the state's authority is still ongoing.
