In November 1940, as Spain is being crushed by the merciless heel of dictator Franco, Pepita journeys from rural Huelva to Madrid to be near her sister Hortensia, who is seven months pregnant and imprisoned, tormented by the shadow of a death sentence. The Spanish Civil War ended in April 1939.
