The Silence Before Bach

This most recent film by the outré and experimental Catalan director Portabella is a lovely, occasionally borderline nutty celebration and meditation on the significance of Bach's music in the modern world. The movie creates a fun, impressionistic series of variants on the thesis that Johann Sebastian revolutionized the way the world heard because of his amazing ear for harmony by fusing historical reconstruction with extremely loosely connected "dramatic" scenes and documentary sequences.
