The Reluctant Astronaut

Roy Fleming, a small-town child ride operator who is terrified of heights, is played by Don Knotts. Roy grudgingly travels to Houston after finding that his father has signed him up for the space program, only to discover that his job is as a janitor, not an astronaut. Roy manages to keep up a charade of being an astronaut to his family and friends, despite his anxiety about living up to his dominating father's expectations. When NASA plans to send a layperson into orbit to test the viability of a new autonomous spaceship, Roy is forced to confront his concerns.
