The Reader

The narrative of Michael Berg, a German lawyer who, as a teenager in the late 1950s, had an affair with an older woman, Hanna, who later disappeared and resurfaced as a war crimes defendant for her conduct as a concentration camp guard late in the war. He is the only one who recognizes Hanna is illiterate and may be concealing it at the expense of her liberty.
