The Profession of Arms

The German landsknechts under the command of Georg von Frundsberg are sent on a march toward Rome by Emperor Charles V in the fall of 1526. In the midst of a severe winter, the lesser papal forces under Giovanni de'Medici attempt to pursue them. However, thanks to the movements of its Lords, the Imperial troops are able to get guns and cross the rivers in their path. A falconnet shot during a battle strikes Giovanni de'Medici in the leg. The treatments don't work, and he passes away. Rome is attacked by imperial forces. The film depicts the harsh conditions in which war is fought and its lack of glory in a nicely understated setting. Directly following the death of Giovanni de'Medici, the leaders of the European armies issued the vow that they would refrain from employing firearms due of their barbaric nature.
