Ada McGrath and her small daughter Flora are left on a New Zealand beach with all of their things, including a piano, after a long journey from Scotland. Ada has been sold into marriage to Alisdair Stewart, a local guy who has been deaf since childhood. Ada, who makes little effort to warm up to Alisdair, is immediately smitten by his Maori-friendly acquaintance, George Baines, which leads to tense, life-altering disputes.
