The Phantom of Liberty

This Surrealist Spanish film, with a title that alludes to the Communist Manifesto, weaves together a series of small occurrences based on the life of director Luis Buuel into a cohesive whole. These loosely related, crossing scenarios, all without a consistent protagonist, are presented as fortuitous encounters and span the period from the nineteenth century to the 1970s. The film includes a diverse cast of characters, including a sick father and incompetent police officers, and touches on a variety of topics, including execution, pedophilia, incest, and sex.
