The Orphanage

A historical drama featuring Bollywood musical moments. Kabul, early 1990s. The country is governed by Soviet ideals. Women can wear miniskirts to school, and people can go to the movies, concerts, and universities. Life in Afghanistan is comparable to life in the West. Qodrat, 14, sells movie tickets on the illegal market in Kabul's streets. He ends himself at the Soviet orphanage after accidentally selling a ticket to a secret police official, where he fakes his name at registration in the hopes of gaining greater power. Friendships, falling in love, being mischievous, and embarking on adventures are all part of Qodrat's daily life, just as they are for children all around the world. However, the world they once knew is changing dramatically behind the secure walls of the orphanage as the Mujahideens begin the civil war.
