Felix Ungar has recently divorced his wife. Despondent, he attempts suicide, but is saved by his friend Oscar Madison. Oscar convinces Felix to move in with him for the time being because he has nowhere else to go. The only problem is that Felix is neat, tidy, and neurotic, whereas Oscar is sloppy and casual.
