Freelance software developer Angela Bennett is immersed in the realm of computers. At the behest of an online friend, Bennett discovers that she has become entangled in an elaborate plot that will change the course of her life. During a trip to Mexico, her wallet is taken from her. As she becomes the target of an assassination, she discovers that people and events aren't always what they appear to be. Her dream getaway has been destroyed. In Mexico, she obtains a new passport under the name Ruth Marx, but this is a mistake. Once in the United States, she learns that Ruth Marx has a criminal past and extensive police records. Worse, someone else is using her genuine name and claiming to be her.
